So my Grandfather Sent This About Christmas Eve
Our celebration begins at 1 p. m. on Saturday, December 24 at my apartment with the exchange of gifts. Then we should plan on dinner at 2 p.m.or so.
Jim, Maria and Siobhan will occupy my apartment the night of the 23rd. I will occupy Ruth’s guest room.
Maria has volunteered to head up menu planning. Each of the above four groups will handle an assignment. We do not wish to involve Maria...
Greetings from Blythewood, SC
Our Thanksgiving trip to NC has been temporarily delayed by the Olde English Bulldog sitting in the car who stepped on the lock button while I was pumping gas. 45 minutes for AAA to get here. We are not amused.
Letter Came Today!
Student teaching in a fifth grade class! It’s a good day.
Also, my dad mailed my new AAA card.
So I Just Remembered...
My student teaching for the spring gets mailed out of the office (Yes, the office two floors down from me) on Monday (and yet, I’m not allowed to just go ask for the letter). Then, if you consider Thanksgiving and the College’s mail office. I should know where I’m teaching next semester in 2 weeks.
Written? Kitten! →
I know the Daily What posted this, but Tumblr Ed community, if you are the sort of teacher who gives ___hundred word assignments, the website gives you a word counter and then gives you a new picture of a kitten every 100/200/500/1000 words.
It is pretty awesome.
Habits of Mind →
So one of the women in my education program recommended this Habits of Mind idea for me. Teachers at the school she volunteers at use the program and it helps build their vocabulary as well working on their behaviors in the classroom. Thought someone out there might want to take a look at this.

This is Why I Wish I Understood My Students'...
Student: I eat it every day!
Me (Clearly confused about what she's talking about): That's cool.
Student: What do I eat every day?
Me: Food, I assume. Hopefully, not your boogers.
Student: Are you saying I eat boogers?! Are you trying to play me?! You trying to play me in your church shoes?! I'm not talking to you.
Just a little follow-up to that last post
‘Pseudonymous Bosch is also scheduled to make an appearance, both at the Jr. YALLFest panel and at an event where he’ll interview himself in the Blue Bike courtyard. However, the elusive author ofThe Secret Series tells us to be wary of imposters. “During my time at YALLFest, I intend to confiscate and destroy all copies of my books that I can find,” he says. “I...
Words of Encouragement
We had this guest speaker last night in class. He is a local principal who seems to have this talent for turning around schools that aren’t doing well (which in South Carolina is a huge deal) and is generally awesome. The school he is principal of now is an arts-infused school and it sounds like his school is the one everyone should want to teach at. Then he goes “But, even if I have...

Hooray Mini-Crisis!
I’ve been having some problems lately, largely due to the kids in my field class. Specifically, several of the girls in the class just don’t respect me at all. I’ve tried being nice, being firm, being consistent, but they don’t want to listen when I ask them to do something.
Really? Girls in an urban school want to sass the skinny, white guy teaching them? Who would...
The Scourge of "Like"
discoverynews:
scribnerbooks:
Our favorite entry from our favorite grammar grouch, Robert Hartwell Fiske, in his Dictionary of Unendurable English.
Like is used to mean “whatever word or words its user does not know or cannot be bothered to think of… Like means everything and nothing at once.”
What a powerful word to mean nothing and everything.
